Happy Thanksgiving


Last post today, I promise (I only have a few more I'm moving over then things will stabilize). I want to give thanks for my wife and children and my family and friends; for the many opportunities we have been given and for allowing us to be good stewards of those responsibilities; and especially the continued courage, strength, wisdom and patience required to lead firefighters and rescue personnel not just on emergency scenes, but daily, where it really counts. My wife says all the time, "Of those who have much, much is expected." I believe it and hope to always live up to it.

Customer Service

This is a post I wrote originally for my blog at FirefighterNation.com:

Customer relations are essential for any department operating in this day and age, as our customers (read: taxpayers) are more educated and have higher expectations of the emergency services. These expectations come from watching television shows that portray us in a certain light as well as more information going out in the form of public education efforts.There are considerable efforts being made by leaders in our industry to increase our professionalism. We need to consciously market our concepts in a positive way.

Likewise, there are expectations not only when dealing with the public, but with internal customers as well:In our organization, we have adopted objectives for personnel that read like these:

  • Fire and Rescue personnel shall give high priority to customer satisfaction by anticipating customer needs, time constraints and their desired outcome.
  • We must listen to customers, seek to understand them, and empathize with the customer’s perspective, especially treating the customer with respect.
  • We must strive to consistently respond to customer requests in a courteous, efficient and timely manner.
  • Fire and Rescue personnel shall demonstrate a commitment to meeting customer requirements with a sense of urgency, proactively following through to resolve issues.
  • We must create realistic expectations and regularly inform our customers of status/progress, provide options/alternatives if needed, and successfully help our customers understand and accept negative outcomes.
  • A big part of all of our jobs is to support our other team members in meeting their customers’ expectations.

You all know what good customer service feels like and you all know what it’s like to have bad customer service. I suggest to you that professionalism begins at using our skills, abilities and past experience to improve service quality and to provide excellent service not just to the taxpayers, but to your colleagues.

We need to make it part of our personal mission to exceed at helping people when they need help- that’s why we got into this business to begin with. Often, when we get called, someone else is having a bad day. Our job is to try to help solve that situation, or at least to lend a hand in making it a little better. When supervisors ask you to perform a task, even though sometimes we don’t feel up to it, remember that it’s all part of a bigger picture and realize that we need to serve our customers in many ways, some of which may not be immediately obvious to each of us.

The impact you have isn't just felt in your local departments, but across the nation as well. When you make it known that you are a firefighter, you are, like it or not, representing all of us in this business, career or volunteer. It's a huge responsibility, but something you can handle.

Remember, when you are interacting with that civilian, are you treating that person like you would want to be treated yourself in a similar circumstance? You have an obligation to all of us to represent the profession in a positive light and to try to aid when possible, and to try to assist someone in finding solutions to their problems when you can't.

Rebel or Revolutionary - You Choose

With all of the change going on in the atmosphere, I was contemplating the difference between being a rebel and a revolutionary. It seems to me that there are plenty of firefighters who are a little mixed up and don't understand the difference. The problem is that while revolutionaries effect change in a situation, rebels simply refuse to obey.

Why should that matter? When we are agitating for change in our current situation, being a revolutionary suggests turning or moving, which is hopefully a positive thing. Rebelling doesn't suggest anything positive at all. I know firefighters who think that their rebellious actions suggest something courageuous or heroic, where I am suggesting that those individuals aren't any of that at all. In fact, many of the "rebels" I have encountered are resisting change for good because it upsets their version of the status quo.

If you are pushing against the status quo in order to make positive change, you are sure to meet with resistance from those who are comfortable in that little rut they have dug. Anything you may do to move them from it is going to be perceived as threatening to their happiness and they may lash out at you. They are not going to understand your motives or they may not want to understand. Things may even get dangerous, for your career or for you personally.

The winds of change are blowing and we can either flex with them and survive, or resist them and be broken off at the trunk. We in emergency services need to understand our entire environment and be revolutionaries, to think about things in ways we never thought of them before, for the good of our profession.

Opening Salvo

For the reader's sake, because these first thoughts on this blog are all going to come across as hit-or-miss (because they are in no particular order), I am copying over some of my blog entries from other areas where I contribute, because they seem to be geting lost in the static by challenging issues like "What Lights Look Better On My POV".

My intent is that this blog will be more about the essence and issues of leading and motivating and creating change and improvement. I don't have problems with the "popular" issues; they are obviously popular for a reason. I just have different questions and a different vision.

I also wanted to do something different from the "hard" solutions and tactics and the kind of stuff that seems to be what a lot of others are writing about. And I definitely don't want this to be about problems; more like about solutions and ways to encourage thinking and solving for X.

So in a nutshell, I wanted to do something different (I think I made the point that it's different).

So for the next few says, expect to see some old stuff you may have seen before, or new stuff I'm hitting as I see some of the old stuff.

What Changes Are In Store Today?

Do you wonder what technological advances will come down the line in the next five, ten, or fifteen years that will change the way we do business? I never thought I’d see computers being essential for my job when I started years ago, nor did we ever imagine some of the other things (like search-cams, thermal imagers, and that kind of stuff) that are part of our everyday existence. Here’s a link to an article on an item I am hearing more and more about each day: a firefighting “grenade”. Who knows where something like this could take us? Fast response units in cars or motorcycles that could get there first and make a knock-down before the bigger units come in and mop up? The ultimate elimination or re-engineering of the fire engine as we know it now? What problem, if we could solve it today, would make our job much easier?

I was sent a National Institute of Justice report on US&R that imagined things like a “robo-cop”-like outer garment we could put on to enable us to lift heavy objects, which I thought was pretty far out there, but some of the other innovations we thought were pipe dreams that are now being used like a “life detector”; a device that will pick up the frequency produced by a human heartbeat and amplify it so we can look into rubble piles and see if we can find someone alive in there.

What problems in our department can we solve if we work together to find a solution? Sometimes it’s a matter of looking past the conventional solutions and having some vision that could make all of our jobs easier or even better yet, safer. Buckle up and pay attention to the details- they could save your life.

Cars That Go Boom and Other Stuff

Here's a twist on a relatively old technology being used for new purposes; cars that go “boom”. If you’ve ever been annoyed by extremely loud bass in the car four blocks away from you and wondered what that was all about, now you too can have it in your emergency vehicle and the concept is actually being put to good use. The point I want to make about it here, however is that sometimes drivers have a tendency to over-rely on their emergency warning devices, and in particular, sirens. A siren is only effective if the person it is intended to alert can hear it. With so many “tight” cars and loud sound systems, as well as air conditioning and road noise, you have less and less of an opportunity to get that driver’s attention. Add in the elderly or drivers who are distracted (read: cell phone), and you have virtually no chance of pointing out that you need to get through. As emergency vehicle drivers, we have the responsibility of insuring that we drive with due regard; don’t assume that the drivers know or even care that you are responding (in some cases, they don’t). Avoid causing panic stops, don’t overdrive your siren, and always try to look the other driver in the eyes when you approach an intersection.

Many of these drivers can’t drive well on a good day; don’t believe for a second that they’ll all do what they are supposed to on a bad one. Buckle up, drive defensively, and let’s all go home in the morning.

Buckle Up!

As noted on http://www.firefighterclosecalls.com/, there have been quite a few apparatus rollovers in recent days. Fortunately, firefighters are getting the message to buckle up and lives are being saved. The first article on there this morning has to do with a rollover where just this same thing happened. There can be no debate: Seat belts save lives. You have a responsibility to yourself and your family to buckle up, not to mention your organization. If you won’t do it for your brothers, do it for yourself. There is no reason for the fire service to continue to repeat the tragedy of LODD events related to firefighters failing to heed this warning.

Have a safe day- use common sense and prevent accidents before they occur.

Forward to Yesteryear?

The other day I challenged my battalion to think about methods or technology that would essentially change the way we do business in the future (like the Fire Grenade). Today I want you to consider that things the fire service did in the past may very well catch up to us as well. The case in point is this one, where private fire contractors are being paid by insurance companies to go in ahead of regular fire assets and secure homes endangered by wildland interface fires. As you can see in the article, insurance companies are taking measures to keep from having large losses by hiring their own crews, somewhat like insurance companies did over 200 years ago. While this measure is a little controversial, the idea of the insurance companies realizing that public fire protection is understaffed and underequipped for fires of this magnitude and sending their own response is a very interesting one and something that could arguably be stretched into other venues as well. Just because we do our job one way today means nothing tomorrow. Be prepared for change by educating yourself and opening your mind to other possibilities. You might be the person who comes up with a solution to a fire service problem and radically changes the way we operate in the future.

In the meanwhile, however, you can make huge changes in another way; by minimizing firefighter deaths and injuries by using good safety practices, working as a team, and preventing problems before they begin. Use your safety equipment and practices and let’s all go home in the morning.

Entering IntoThe Blogosphere

I'll keep it short but sweet; I've been blogging for a few others and figured maybe I need to blog for myself. This will be a site for discussion of much of the emergency service leadership issues that revolve especially around special operations, since that is where my interests lie. So if you have some ideas, let them fly. In the meanwhile, I'm out here.
